This mansion was built by the Goyeneche family,
to be used as a country house. It was the temporary residence
of Goyeneche Bishop between the years 1818 – 1858. On
1837 the Bishop hired the famous arquitec Lucas Poblete to outline
the Cathedral and later to build his mansion. The
mansion was built mainly with sillar (white volcanic stone), it
has two floors, an impressive front that resemble te front of a
castle and surrounded by beautiful gardens. In the gardens are decorated
with big “chombas” (containers made with clay).
The house has an extraordinary countryside view.
By those days, the mansion was the most beautiful house around Arequipa.
It has exellent furnitures, the first private library in town and
a great documental archives about the emancipation period.
All these last until 1945 when the Goyeneche family lost the mansion
and all their treasures were dispersed or losted.
The Banco Central de Reserva made a rebuilding of the mansion giving
back its brightness. It was inaugurated on December 19 of
1979. Nowa days is private and it is not a open to tourists.
